Landsbankinn is one of the largest banks in Iceland, headquartered in Reykjavik. EFLA provided a full engineering design service for the new landmark office building adjacent to the Harpa Concert Hall, with EFLA Kevan Shaw Lighting Design providing both exterior and interior lighting design.
The lighting scheme compliments C.F. Møller Architects’ design, inspired by Iceland’s caves and clefts. The illumination of the textured volcanic basalt exterior is minimal and mindful of light pollution. A subtle wash lights each façade to accentuate peaks in the dramatic geometry, and to graze the horizontal layers of the Icelandic rock surface. Tailored lighting columns have been positioned in pedestrian areas, providing general lighting to the exterior areas but also accent lighting to the façade through the integration of spotlights.
The interior lighting is largely integrated into the architecture, seamlessly becoming part of the space. In specific areas such as the entrance lobby and main hall, the lighting is allowed to become a focal feature adding visual interest. Functional lighting for workstations and decorative lighting for spaces such as break rooms and conversational areas was also part of the scheme. The lighting approach brings an air of contemporary elegance to the project.
