Limnos, Greece

‘Apothiki’ is the Greek word for warehouse and the name of the Art Gallery based in Limnos, Greece. The space is a building constructed about 1900, following the typical architecture of Greek Islands in the Aegean Sea. Renovated in 2015, the building has been transformed into a multi-use space with a focus on hosting temporary art exhibitions. KSLD helped the client to achieve flexibility with a custom lighting installation.

KSLD had to take into consideration the old wooden beam structure of the roof that was retained and deliver a lighting design solution that would respect and enhance that structure. The natural light in the room was limited, so the lighting is designed to create an atmosphere and feeling of soft daylight in the room. The design is quite discrete, giving indirect light without hard shadows and focused light only on the exhibits.

The lighting installation was designed to be adjustable to allow for different exhibition layouts. Comprised of LED track spotlights of different beam angles, each fixture has an integrated dimmer. The light output of each fitting can be adjusted separately, giving a great flexibility to the exhibitor. The control strategy allows the user to separately dim the general, indirect (uplighting) and exhibition lighting and set different light scenes according to the requirements of each exhibition. The fittings have white finish following the architect’s pallet of white materials which are typical in traditional Greek architecture.
