KSLD were asked in May 2013 by The University of Dundee to design a dramatic lighting centrepiece that would provide a focal point between the exiting Welcome Trust Building and the new Centre for Translational and Interdisciplinary Research Building.
“The aspiration is that the installation will intrigue and attract people to this area of the building...The lighting is intended as both a lighting and art installation, to represent some of the work carried out by COLS. The design chosen represents the word ‘CELL’ translated into peptide acid symbols.” University of Dundee
The whole team at KSLD worked together testing out many variation of the design and its construction, finally settling on a modular LED system comprised of identical custom internally lit cylinders. The joints are based on knuckles allowing the components to be connected at a variety of angles.
The feature can be viewed from many angles both inside and outside through the large glazed areas of the Atrium. The light intensity is varied according to the time of the day and the two depictions of the word “cell” can be separately illuminated. The control system is also flexible allowing the university to easily manipulate the lighting in order to create a variety of lighting effects.
