Located in a privileged position overlooking the skyline of Inverness, the castle stands as a defining landmark within the Highland landscape.

Our approach sought to settle the architectural ensemble within its setting and bond it to the substratum. The horizontal base grounds the building to the hill while the battlements form a quiet crown that defines the silhouette against the night sky.

Read as a jewel within the landscape, the composition allows the highest tower to emerge as a subtle focal point. Reinforcing the ramparts proved essential in reconnecting the castle to the terrain and preventing the structure from appearing to float after dark.

A restrained hierarchy of light, expressed through calibrated tones of warm white, nearly amber, enhances materiality while preserving the dignity of the listed fabric. The scheme was also designed to accommodate an RGBW system for civic events, while maintaining a refined everyday appearance.

The final result establishes a carefully considered night-time identity that enhances the castle while remaining respectful and non-invasive. High-efficiency LED technology reduced energy consumption and supports long-term sustainability, while the ice-proof Polar Edition prevents snow and ice build up, ensuring reliable winter performance.

Luminaires were discreetly integrated within the architectural fabric and colour-matched to the window frames and stonework to minimise daytime visibility. Bespoke brackets and fixing profiles were developed to ensure fixing to mortar joints without drilling into the stone, preserving the heritage envelope and reinforcing the integrity of the building.
