Glasgow, Scotland

Originally opened in 1999, the malls and main atrium of Braehead Shopping Centre have recently been refurbished in a project led by architects Chapman Taylor. The upper mall level has been enhanced with large horizontal panels which form a frieze running above the store fronts; this is designed to extend the visible signage of the retailers and provide advertising opportunities.

KSLD’s scope included providing lighting to these new panels, which is achieved by uplighting the frieze with high powered linear LED fittings from Vexica. The existing downlight scheme was also reviewed, with the compact fluorescent downlights being replaced on a one-for-one basis with PhotonStar LED downlights. These provide an equivalent illuminance while achieving 40% reductions in energy use. Further energy savings are gained by the introduction of daylight linking at the upper mall levels.

In the main atrium, an edge cove detail with sleeved fluorescent battens has been replaced by RGB colour change LEDs. This allows the operator to tailor the atrium to different events and seasons, giving them a marketing edge and greatly increasing the flexibility of the space. There are also benefits in terms of reduced maintenance. Braehead Shopping Centre have recently been refurbished in a project led by architects Chapman Taylor.
