KSLD was chosen to update the exterior lighting at Stobo Castle Hotel & Spa near Peebles, Scotland. Led by former senior lighting designer Claire Hope, the KSLD team worked to create a plan that would bring out the natural historic beauty of the Castle. Warm light from LED luminaires was chosen to accentuate the undulating texture of the historic stone facade and key elements such as the battlements, turrets and coach porch. Miniature bracket mounted luminaires were concealed behind the battlements, subtly highlighting the Castle’s outline. Each light position was tested to ensure that neither the rural location nor the guests inside would be disturbed by obtrusive light.
The team proposed to revive the historic entrance with gas flambeaux, custom designed by Claire Hope and Beltane Studios. The design was influenced by local wild flowers and wildlife. Abstract antler and thistle forms can be identified within the delicate body of the bronze structure. Working closely with flambeaux specialists, KSLD designed the internal make-up of the units to promote stable vibrant gas flames. Once the plan was accepted, and Scotlight had installed the fittings, our team went to Stobo Castle, with Fin Barber and the crew of Scotlight to focus the luminaires.
The Stobo Castle Hotel landscape design was conceived to maintain the dramatic natural environment at night, while highlighting the Castle's special historic features, and providing safe and welcoming pedestrian paths for guests.
